• 3 possible solutions discussed 
• One solution proposed was to re-vamp the current orientation offered to transfer students.  Students would become familiar to the campus.  Then the transfer students would get split into groups.  One group would be for commuting transfer students.  The other group would be living on campus transfer students.
• The second solution is an extension of the first. Once the initial orientation, transfer students would be assigned  to a  mentor.  This mentor would take them on a tour of the campus and also answer any questions the student has.  The mentor would be there throughout the semester for the transfer student.  It would also allow the student to meet other transfer students within that group.
• The third solution is an orientation based on team building.  It will consist of a full day in which transfer students get to know one another.  Its an interactive based orientation.

• Next step:  Each group member will be responsible for research about solutions.

• Have you considered a different WOW program for transfer students, separate from the traditional freshman?
• What has the university done in the past to help some of these problems surrounding transfer students?
• How can you get transfer students to be more interested in the information we give to them?  As a transfer student myself, I poured hours into understanding the university before I came here;  my transition was very easy because of it.  Is there a way to influence transfer students to research our university?
• Are you focusing on transfer or commuter students?
• What information is being offered?  What specific information are you wanting to see shared in orientation?  In my experience, the necessary information is given, but transfer students don't attend because they've "done it before."
• What information is already given, what information should be given?
• What does a successful transition look like to you, rather than an unsuccessful transition?

• Issue:  How can we implement a solution to better help transfer students feel acclimated to the University of Wisconsin-River Falls campus?
• Powerpoint presentation-Divided up presentation sections: 
• Haley- will introduce the parameters of the problem
•  Allissa- will elaborate on the causes for the background
•  Nicole- will talk about who/what is affected by the problem. 
• Amanda -will provide evidence and prove why it is a concern. 
• Abbie- will conclude the presentation.

Further Defining Problem at Hand:

• The following is still being hashed out to come to a consensus, but from everyone's own ideas, these seem to be a good starting point of our problem in terms of what/cause/effect/why concern. We will expand on these during presentation including some facts/data to justify claims:
• What is the problem: transfer students lack of campus acclimation 
• Causes: lack of communication, and not providing pertinent information, not an adequate orientation program relevant to transfer students
• Effects: lack of awareness to campus and it’s resources, transfer students feeling confused, anxious, and stressed. Transfer students may also second guess decision, and want to transfer to a different school. 
• Why this is a concern: not being appropriately/adequately informed, and feeling “out of the loop” in a new environment can have negative impacts on the student’s success, and overall wellbeing. As a public university, we should aim at having all students feel like they are equipped to handle the pressures of their new environment, and make them feel included and welcomed.

For next meeting:We will work on creating the powerpoint presentation, and going over our problem more in depth based on our google docs collaboration to form presentation.

Collaborated on an Issue for the UWRF campus

• Issue:  Transfer students do not get the proper orientation to the campus.  We would like to find solutions to help ease this transition for transfer students.
• Ideas:  Have several mandatory presentations in which transfer students can choose which one works best for their schedule.  Then break down into smaller groups.  This way they can get a tour of the campus, and get to know other transfer students.   Also, we would like to conduct surveys or interviews asking transfer students how their transition was into the school.  

For next meeting:

• All group members will post their ideas for explaining what the problem is, specifics on the causes and effects, and why the issue is a concern to UWRF.  
• We will be using Google Docs to collaborate our ideas until our next group meeting on Oct. 10th
